Makani was designed to provide a safe, fast experience on a modern catamaran. WD was responsible for developing the shape of the hull and all of the structural engineering. She is constructed of epoxy and E-glass with foam core. Carbon fiber is used where appropriate to save weight and add strength in critical areas such as the beams. She is equipped with the best gear for ease of handling and speed. Her rig is constructed by Southern Spars.
Makani operates out of Honolulu, Hawaii. She is USCG licensed for exposed waters and to carry up to 80 passengers and 4 crewmembers. Highest top speed reported (so far) by the captain is 28 knots under sail. Her design would be a great starting point for either a fast private yacht or a charter cat. Makani was built at Gold Coast Yachts and launched in June 2005. Her successful hull design has since been used for several subsequent boats.
